最近（2012/5）はmysql2を使いますね
gemでmysqlのライブラリをインストール
オプション無しだとエラーとなる
$ sudo gem install mysql

オプションを付けてインストール
riドキュメントとrdocドキュメントの生成を省いて(これを省くとインストール時間が早い)、mysql-configから設定を読み込む
$ sudo gem install mysql --no-rdoc --no-ri -- --with-mysql-config
Building native extensions. This could take a while...
Successfully installed mysql-2.7
1 gem installed
irbで確認
$ irb
irb(main):001:0> require 'rubygems'
=> true
irb(main):002:0> require 'mysql'
=> true
